From both human and AI creators, the festival has received submissions from around the world — some forged through lived experience and craft, others generated by advanced algorithms and machine learning models. The Sparknify Humanity Award seeks to honor the film — regardless of its origin — that most deeply connects with audiences, stirs emotion, and challenges perception. It is a call to action for traditional filmmakers to lean into narratives that only human beings can tell. At the same time, it elevates AI-generated films as genuine expressions of technological ingenuity, imagination, and emotional mimicry.

We honor visionary creators on both sides: filmmakers committed to conveying raw, authentic human experience, and AI artists racing toward — and perhaps past — the Turing Test, using machines to reflect back truths about the human condition. The Sparknify Humanity Award inspires all storytellers — human or machine — to observe, learn, and deepen their understanding of what humanity truly means.

As the boundary between creator and code grows thinner, this award asks two pressing questions at the heart of today’s creative revolution:

Can AI capture the essence of humanity more convincingly than humans themselves?

And in response, can humans better define what makes their creativity — and their humanity — truly unique?

If an AI-generated film takes home the top prize this year, it could mark a cultural milestone as significant as Garry Kasparov’s historic loss to IBM’s Deep Blue — a moment when human supremacy in one domain was decisively eclipsed by machine intelligence.

To ensure a rigorous and diverse evaluation, the winner will be selected by an international panel of distinguished judges, including leading voices from top academic institutions, acclaimed directors, actors, and pioneers in digital effects and generative media. Together, they represent a rich blend of expertise in both storytelling and technological advancement.

This year’s official film selections reflect a global spectrum of creative voices. The 14 nominated short films include The Writer’s Horror by Sergiy Pudich representing Ukraine and Thailand, Pi in the Sky by Petra Molnar from the United Kingdom, and Migratory Movements by Brazilian filmmaker Rogério Cathalá. From Chile, The Monkey With Its Tongue Out is directed by Sebastian Arriagada, while Peru is represented by Manuel Larios with Heal. Spain contributes two powerful entries: #Beachfile by Carles Bigorra and Dark, Light, Yellow by Fran Gas. Moroccan director Mariam Mouzoul offers The Living Room, and Silentium comes from Roméo Lefèvre of France. Italian filmmaker Gianluca Zonta presents The Aquarium, and Taiwan is represented by Johnny Su with Partner. From Japan, Akari Sōma delivers AI Love You, AI Don’t Love You, while Hungary is represented by Endling, directed by Endre Andor Lengyel. Rounding out the lineup is Meet Me in Chinatown by Jerry Hsiao and Anna Sophie Loewenberg from the United States. Together, these films represent a global dialogue between traditional and generative creators — all competing for one defining question: What does it mean to be human?
